The Living Room Set returns on March 14th with a special Universal Kirtan edition featuring returning guest, Zamir Dhanji!
This past January, HOA welcomed Zamir to our Shala for his Inner Path course and a guest appearance at our Living Room Set, where he shared his acquired wisdom with the community and inspired a greater integration of the Self through the unifying medium of sound. Combining storytelling and music, Zamir and our resident musician Jens led a session that sought to catalyse healing and transformation within the HOA community. Zamir returns this month to join us for another soulful musical evening that will elevate our consciousness through a Universal Kirtan.
But what is Kirtan exactly?
Kirtan is a Sanskrit word that means “to praise that which is exalted”. The word “Kirtan” also stems from a Sanskrit root that means “to cut through,” for which it is a practice for cutting through the idea of separation, for connecting to our hearts and to the moment through sound. In ancient India where the practice originated, Kirtan is part of an ancient form of yoga known as Bhakti, or the yoga of Devotion. Kirtan typically involves the chanting or singing of mantras that often feature the names of the myriad gods and goddesses that were identified by the ancient rishis (or seers) in Vedic times, and later became central to religions such as Hinduism and Sikhism. In some forms of Kirtan, the leader sings the mantra, and the audience sings it back. These ancient mantras contain a transformative power and healing energy when listened to, or sung along with intention.
Today, Kirtan is widely performed around the world as a joyful devotional practice that helps to uplift the mind, open the heart and bring a deep sense of inner peace. By singing these mantras we join a stream of consciousness and devotion that has been flowing for centuries. We invoke the many names and manifestations of the Divine Spirit and we connect with the integral human yearning to know the source of our creation.
Kirtan is a technology for accessing Spirit - a sonic meditation that brings us into the resonance of unity. It is a passport to the heart and medicine for the soul. This Universal Kirtan presented by Zamir is meant to celebrate all spiritual traditions with chants and stories from diverse faiths. Mantras will be simple and accessible, explained with accompanying projections so that is easy to follow. Don’t worry if you think you can’t sing! Simply allow the sound and the potency of the mantras to resonate deep within your soul, and spark the light of exaltation inside you.
Join us at HOA for our very first Universal Kirtan at The Living Room Set and connect with yourself and with the Divine through song and music. Kindly arrive between 20:00 - 20:20 as the session begins at 20:30. Get your tickets today!
