The Chakra System Week 7: Crown Chakra

Our Chakra System syllabus at HOA aims to provide a deeper understanding of the subtle energy centers that govern our physical and energetic body. In the past 6 weeks, we have ascended up the spinal column, discovering the energy of each chakra and the vital role they play in regulating the wellbeing of our Body, Mind and Spirit. By ensuring our chakra energies are balanced, we may enjoy a healthy and more harmonious human experience on Earth.

On this final week December 16th - 22nd of the syllabus, we arrive at the last chakra; The Crown or the Seventh chakra is located at the top of the head, or slightly above the head. Just as the Root or First Chakra connects us to the Mother Earth, the Crown Chakra is our connection to the Universe. In fact, the Seventh chakra disperses the Universal energy or life force into the Six other chakras located below it. In Sanskrit, the Crown Chakra is named “Sahasrara," which is translated to “thousand fold," it is pictured as a lotus having a thousand white petals.

The Crown is the chakra of Enlightenment and it relates to our connection with our higher selves, others, and ultimately, the Divine. Consciousness is everywhere and in every thing; It connects us to the entire universe. The driving principle of this chakra is thus the awareness of this union. The Crown chakra is also associated with the transcendence of our limitations, and its energy reminds us that we are not defined by our physical bodies nor our mental faculties. The energies of this chakra brings us the awareness that we are actually spiritual beings having a human experience, and that our true essence is eternal.

An under active Crown chakra may cause a person to be rigid, selfish, cynical and spiritually unaware. It can also manifest in depression, nihilism, and a loss of meaning or identity in their life. Blockage in the Crown chakra can also lead to selfish thoughts, inability to see the bigger picture in life and a lack of values and ethics. A person with a closed Crown chakra is unable to receive guidance from the Divine as they are not open to the possibility of its existence. As a result, they remain bitter and hurt individuals unable to find their inner power to overcome their circumstances. Apparently, it is not possible to have an overactive Crown chakra; Due to our mortal limitations, it might prove more useful to practice spiritual development and work on balancing the other chakras to come closer to experiencing Enlightenment. A balanced Crown chakra may feel like having an expanded state of consciousness and being fully spiritually connected to the Divine. With a balanced Crown chakra, we may feel ecstasy, inner peace and abundantly blessed. We may also use the energies of the Crown chakra to consistently practice non-attachment to the material world.

The Crown chakra is primarily associated to the pituitary gland, and secondarily to the pineal and the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland work in pair to regulate the endocrine system. Because of its location, the Crown chakra is closely associated with the brain and the whole nervous system. Energetically, the Seventh chakra has a connection with the First chakra, as they both are at the extremities of the chakra system. The Root chakra connects us to the Earth while the Crown connects us to the great Beyond, and as such, the Crown chakra is governed by the element of Spirit.

The Bīja Mantra (Seed Mantra) of the Crown chakra is AUM, or OM. The mantra, when chanted, vibrates at 432Hz, which is the same vibrational frequency as the Universe. By chanting AUM, we are tuning into our connection to all living beings, nature, the universe and the divine.
