The Chakra System Week 5: Throat Chakra

Our Chakra System syllabus at HOA aims to provide a deeper understanding of the subtle energy centers that govern our physical and energetic body. This week December 2nd - 8th, we move up the spinal column to the fifth chakra, the Throat chakra. Located at the center of the neck at the level of the throat, it is the passage of the energy between the lower parts of the body and the head. The function of the Throat chakra is driven by the principle of expression and communication. The Sanskrit name “Vishuddha” translates to “purification.”

The Throat chakra is associated with the mouth, jaws, tongue, pharynx and palate. It’s is also linked to the shoulders and the neck, and is said to reach even the hands, which are also powerful tools of self-expression. The gland associated with the fifth chakra is the thyroid, which regulates the processing of energy in the body through temperature, growth, and in large parts, metabolism.

The Throat chakra is primarily about self-expression, in conveying our truth, purpose and motivations in life. However we must recognise that we are an expression of the divine, and when we tap into the energies of our Throat chakra, we are conveying the vibrations of love and all that is sacred. The Throat chakra has a natural connection with the Sacral chakra - the center of our emotions and creative energy. These two chakras work together to express creative energy according to its perfect form or authenticity - otherwise known as our highest Truth.

An under active Throat chakra may manifest in inability to communicate, speech disability, feelings of insecurity, timidity and introversion. A person with an under active Throat chakra may have a small voice or may lack connection with having a vocative purpose in life. On the other hand, an overactive Throat chakra may manifest in non-stop, idle talking, gossiping, being verbally aggressive or mean. It can seem as though the filter between the discourse in our mind and what comes out of the mouth is not working or missing entirely. A person with an overactive Throat chakra may have difficulty listening to others, and may have a tendency of interrupting other people. They may also be habitual liars. Physically, this may cause us to suffer from frequent sore throat, mouth infections, ulcers or cavities.

When this chakra is balanced, we can speak easily with love, kindness and truth, which in turn inspires those around us. The Throat chakra also connects us with the Divine Spirit. We are able to raise our vibration by simply using our voice through singing or chanting mantra. We are also able to align our vision with reality by tangibly expressing our intention. A balanced Throat chakra may also enable us to channel Spirit and allow us to communicate with higher dimensional beings for guidance. The Throat chakra is associated with the etheric body, which is said to hold the blueprint or perfect template of the other dimensions of the body. It’s an important reference point to align the energy through the whole chakra system.

The Throat chakra is governed by the element of Sound, Ether. Through the throat, sound is propagated into the air and its vibration can be felt not only by the ears but by the whole body. The same goes with our self-expression: our highest Truth, when expressed, does not only resonate with the intended receiver but creates ripples throughout spacetime.

The Bīja Mantra (Seed Mantra) of the Throat chakra is HAM. It is a sound that integrates truth and power, a sound that moves beyond us, to connect us with the larger whole.
