Super Blood Moon Eclipse

This month, we’re blessed to be able to witness again a spectacular cosmic phenomenon: a Super Blood Moon Eclipse!

Wow, what a mouthful. But what exactly is it?

A Super Moon is a full moon that sees the moon’s position on its elliptical orbit as being at the perigee - also known as its closest distance from the Earth - resulting in a seemingly larger-than-usual size of the lunar disk as viewed from the Earth. The technical or astronomical name for this is the perigee syzygy, which is even harder to pronounce... now we know why the term “Super Moon” is favoured!

As we know, the moon’s gravitational pull has significant impact on the Earth, and as children of the Earth, we would definitely feel it too, especially if the Moon is closer to us than usual. We may feel a little moonstruck, or shaken; after all, the Moon has such an impact on the tides and our geomagnetic activity. During this time, it would serve us well to do lots of grounding.

The “Blood” in Super Blood Moon may seem a little grim but it actually just refers to the Moon turning red during an eclipse. This occurs because the Moon is illuminated by sunlight filtered and refracted through the Earth’s atmosphere. During an eclipse, the Moon is fully in Earth’s shadow. At the same time, a little bit of light from Earth’s sunrises and sunsets falls on the surface of the moon. Because the light waves are stretched out, they look red. It’s not as scary as it sounds, although the Blood Moon has quite the reputation of being a bad omen. The Bible states,

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord.” (Joel 2:31)

Perhaps during an eclipse it is a good time to turn our thoughts inwards, to seek redemption and to humble ourselves to the Divine. The eclipse presents an opportune moment to meditate and reflect on our place in the Universe.
