During our 9 week Solfeggio frequency-based syllabus, we have learnt that all forms of matter vibrate at different frequencies, and to heal with sound is to merely tune the dissonance in our bodies to its optimal frequency. In the next 4-week syllabus (June 3rd - 26th) at HOA, we further our sound-based practice to work with Mantras.
"Mantras are not small things, mantras have power. They are the mind vibration in relationship to the Cosmos. The science of mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy having structure, power, and a definite predictable effect on the chakras and the human psyche." - Yogi Bhajan
Mantra chanting/singing is a time-honoured practice that is prevalent in many belief systems around the world. They can be a single syllable, a word, a group of words, or even multiple lines. However, a mantra might not always have a syntactic structure of literal meaning. It is not necessary to know the meaning of a mantra as what is important is the effect of its unique frequency. When we chant/sing a mantra, we are choosing to invoke the positive power contained in those particular syllables. These are just some of the benefits of mantra chanting/singing:
Blocks stress hormones
Regulates heart rate
Increases immune functions
Lowers blood pressure
Suppresses negative thoughts
Eases fear and anxiety
Strengthens community bonding when sung together
But how does it actually work? Mantra chanting/singing is based on the experience of how sound vibrations affect the mind, body and spirit through the movement of the tongue, the mouth, and changes in the chemicals in the brain. There are 84 meridian points on the upper palate of our mouth. When chanting/singing mantras, the tongue stimulates those meridian points. They in turn stimulate the hypothalamus, which in turn stimulates the pineal gland, creating a pulse in the pituitary gland and causing our glandular system to secrete necessary hormones to balance the chemical composition in our brain. By focusing on a mantra, we also train our mind to release unhelpful chatter that might lead us to negative thoughts and emotions. When we achieve this balanced state, our physical wellbeing and state of mind improve, and so does our outlook on life.
We can also alter our consciousness by changing the chemical composition of the fluids in our brain - and we can potentially achieve this by chanting/singing mantras that encourage the expansion of our consciousness. Regardless of their heritage, language, shape or form, mantras (which can also be known as hymns, prayers or chants) serve similar purposes, which is to raise our vibration and connect us with the divine. Each week at HOA, we will be working with a pair of mantras - one of which we will chant/sing, while the other we will immerse ourselves in, alongside the sound of the Gongs.
